The suicide of a young girl involves Maigret in a dark family story. Bernadette Amorelle, head of Campois and Amorelle, asks the inspector to find out why her granddaughter Monita threw herself into the Seine. Bernadette's daughters Aimée and Odette are married to the brothers Charles and Ernest Malik, the dead woman was Aimée's daughter. Maigret discovers that Monita was intended to be the sole heir of the company, after the son of partner Campois also committed suicide. Maigret wonders if the suicides were not cleverly concealed murders...
